Why I built stockthemes.ai
I'm an investment data scientist that's spent the last 8 years covering hedge fund teams across all sector verticals — tech, energy, consumer, industrials, media etc. To keep up to speed, I've needed to quickly map niche markets and its constituents. Which stocks move on which narratives. Over the years, I've hand-crafted hundreds of theme-specific equities baskets across all sectors. I curate and weight the basket based on stocks most exposed to the stated theme - this takes quite a bit of work. I lots of tools to search across market cap and geographies for the right stocks and weights to express the theme. LLMs like Claude and ChatGPT can't seem to get it right no matter the prompt -- delisted tickers, private companies, wildly inaccurate descriptions. For now, these esoteric, but key, markets must be mapped by hand.
Understanding narrative performance has helped me grasp the market cycle of groups going in and out of favor. Eventually as you track the overarching themes, patterns emerge and market cycles are more easily understood. You see how each narrative moves with each other in a delicate dance. Grasping overarching themes -- to me -- has been much more successful than managing individual stocks.
With the help of Claude Code, I've moved my themes from a slow Plotly dashboard into a lightening-fast web app that shares the hundreds of previously proprietary themes I've built (and maintained) over the years. The site shows how each theme is performing and which companies are driving the trends. This site should be used navigate markets from a narrative lens. There'll be more to come on how to get more from me. For now, browse the themes and check out the site.
I'll continue to develop the site based off of feedback so please share any at hello@stockthemes.ai. Polls will also be used to determine site changes, new features and generally how I spend my time. We've added a loose roadmap of the features we plan to add to the site.
Lastly, while you're here, I'd love for you join our newsletter list. It's a 5-10 minute read on actionable market themes that other outlets miss. We'll assess which themes are impacted by events, explain what to watch for inflecting themes and demystify difficult topics. And it's all written by me -- no AI -- in language everyone can understand. You can sign up at the bottom of the page.
What is a theme basket?
A theme basket is a curated set of public stocks connected by a common narrative, such as AI infrastructure, obesity treatment, or grid modernization.
A Group is the higher-level umbrella, and each Group contains multiple related themes. Think of the Group as the big idea (for example, Space Supply Chain), and each theme as a specific angle within it (for example, launch services, satellite components, or geospatial intelligence).
At stockthemes.ai, these baskets are built by hand after extensive research, not auto-generated from a prompt. I review company filings, earnings commentary, product roadmaps, and initiative-level signals to map which public companies are actually exposed to each theme.
General-purpose LLM outputs often miss this nuance: they can include non-public companies, stale narratives, or outdated initiative exposure. This project is designed to stay closer to what is investable now and what is changing in real markets.
stockthemes.ai tracks each basket's constituents and performance over time so you can compare themes, understand exposure, and follow how membership changes as the narrative evolves.
